Vallabhassery Govindan Vaidyar

Vallabhassery Govindan Vaidyar, along with T.K. Kittan, played a key role in initiating the Sivagiri pilgrimage by seeking Sree Narayana Guru's approval. In 1928, they visited the Guru to propose the idea of making Sivagiri a pilgrimage center, particularly for those facing discrimination in traditional Hindu temples. The Guru, after careful consideration, granted permission, and the first pilgrimage took place in 1932.

Vallabhassery Govindan Vaidyar and T.K. Kittan approached Sree Narayana Guru with the idea of a pilgrimage to Sivagiri, which was then a relatively unknown location. The primary motivation was to provide a pilgrimage center accessible to those marginalized by the caste system, who were often denied entry to established Hindu temples. Sree Narayana Guru, known for his social reforms and emphasis on equality, carefully considered the proposal and ultimately approved the establishment of the Sivagiri pilgrimage. The pilgrimage was envisioned not just as a religious event but also as a means of promoting education, cleanliness, and social reform. The first official Sivagiri pilgrimage, led by a group of five individuals, took place in 1932. The Sivagiri pilgrimage, under the guidance of Sree Narayana Guru, became a significant symbol of social justice and equality, allowing those previously excluded to participate in religious and spiritual practices.
